How to Set Financial Goals

Define targets, track progress, and let AI help you plan.

What You'll Learn

This guide walks you through creating financial goals on your dashboard, reading your progress bars, and using AI allocation advice (Pro/Elite). By the end, you'll have at least one goal set up and tracking.

Step 1: Find the Goals Section

Open the Dashboard and scroll down to the "Financial Goals" section. If it's collapsed, click the header to expand it. This is where all your goals live.

Step 2: Create Your First Goal

Click "Add Goal" and fill in the form:

  • Name: Something short and clear — "Emergency Fund," "Vacation 2027," "Retirement."
  • Target Amount: The total dollar amount you want to reach.
  • Target Date: When you want to hit that number. Be realistic but ambitious.
  • Starting Amount: How much you've already saved toward this goal.

Step 3: Read Your Progress

After saving, your goal appears as a card with a progress bar. The bar fills based on your current amount relative to the target. The percentage is shown alongside the dollar figures.

Colors tell you if you're on pace: green means you're on track, yellow means slightly behind, and red means you may need to adjust your savings rate or target date.

Step 4: Update as You Go

Whenever you add money to savings or your investments grow, update the current amount on your goal. The progress bar and status color update immediately.

You can also edit the target amount or target date if your plans change. Goals should be flexible — life happens.

Step 5: Get AI Allocation Advice (Pro/Elite)

If you're on the Pro or Elite plan, open TrustAI and ask something like: "How should I invest $30K toward retirement in 25 years?" The AI considers your goal timeline, risk tolerance, and market conditions to suggest an asset mix.

You can also reference your specific goal: "I have an emergency fund goal of $15K — where should I keep it?" The AI knows that short-term safety goals need different investments than long-term growth goals.

Key Takeaways

  • Set goals with a name, target amount, target date, and starting amount.
  • Progress bars show green (on track), yellow (slightly behind), or red (off pace).
  • Update your current amount as savings grow or investments appreciate.
  • Pro/Elite users can ask TrustAI for goal-specific allocation advice.
  • Goals are collapsible — hide the section when you don't need it.
